Minette Bay Marina has submitted an application to the provincial government for expanding its moorage facilities to meet the increasing demand from local boaters and tourists.
Established over 50 years ago, Minette Bay Marina currently moors an average of 25-30 vessels, varying by season. In its application the company said the proposed enhancements aim to better serve the boating community by increasing capacity and improving safety measures.
The expansion plan will involve general maintenance of existing structures, such as wood docks and a 350-foot breakwater designed to protect the marina from debris and logs. This initiative aligns with the district’s goals of fostering diversified economic growth, promoting marine-oriented recreational activities, and encouraging environmentally responsible business practices. Additionally, the plan supports the district’s vision of maximizing tourism potential and enhancing community recreational amenities.
The application lies within provincial jurisdiction, but local government is invited to submit comments.
Although generally supportive of the expansion, at its July 22 meeting Kitimat council noted the application involves operations in marine environments, including docks and the breakwater situated in the water. In its comments to the province, council emphasized the sensitivity of nearby areas, such as Pine Creek and Cordella Creek, which are designated as environmentally sensitive in the Kitimat Official Community Plan.
Council also stressed the importance of consultation with the nearby Haisla Nation. While the province is expected to undertake this consultation, council insisted that the applicant also engage with the nation.
